Camellia Open Sky School Enlightens Tea Farmers in Bangladesh

Camellia Open Sky School, the school without walls and roof is spreading the light among the small holding tea farmers in Bangladesh.

Camellia Open Sky School, a new concept is spreading the light among the small holding tea farmers in Bangladesh. More than seven thousands tea farmers are getting the light of education from this school.

The school without walls and roof is not a traditional school. Apart from imparting unknown information about tea to the farmers, hand-to-hand training is being provided to the farmers on various topics including tea variety selection, nursery preparation, plant planting, leaf selection, pruning, irrigation and water drainage, fertilizer application and pest and disease control. Under the open sky, 40 to 50 small tea growers are organized in each training workshop.

Bangladesh Tea Board (BTB) had earlier provided training for small scale tea growers under its different projects. However, in order to further expedite the training system and bring the service to the doorsteps of the farmers, the chairman of the BTB, Major General Md. Zahirul Islam introduces the idea of the open sky school. From the scientific name of tea, Camellia Sinensis, the school is named Camellia Open Sky School. He inaugurated it on October 25, 2020 at Tetulia in Panchagor. Since then, the Panchagarh Regional Office of the Bangladesh Tea Board has started training tea growers in Camellia Open Sky Schools in Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari and Bandarban of Chattogram Hill Tract. Through this, training services will be provided at the doorsteps of 1,510 registered and 5,800 unregistered small tea farmers in the northern region throughout the year. The Tea Board has already run these open air schools in 32 places in six districts.
